The legendary Black Widow was manufactured by the Acoustic Corporation, a company better known for amplifiers. Most of the Black Widow "Spider" guitars were manufactured in Japan. However, approximately 200 Guitar & Bass models were produced by Mosrite in their Bakersfield plant at the end of the Black Widow's production-run.
The Acoustic Black Widow "Spider" was nic-named by Hendrix. All black except for the defining feature... A red leather pad on its back.
You are viewing a very rare homegrown Mosrite Black Widow. They're easily identified by many Mosrite parts and a very Mosrite neck. A number of Black Widow parts were inter-mingled between the Japanese & Mosrite assembly plants in '73. Mixed-parts and features, such as 2 & 3 bolt neck designs and the Mosrite steel-nut, are apparent on various '73 Black Widow models.
The definitive way to determine which plant produced a particular Black Widow is thru the Serial Number Stamp. The Japanese models had a serial number plate afixed to the back of the guitar. The Mosrite version has the serial number imprinted on the fret board below the 24th fret.
Master guitar builder Paul Barth, whose history includes work with Rickenbacker & Magnatone, did the original design for the Black Widow.
