The Vox Ultrasonic V-268 was a late sixties semi-acoustic
model sporting built-in effects. It was modeled
after the Gibson ES-335
but without the set neck. This made it
more like a Fender Coronado
or Hagstom Viking but with its own unique features
like a teardrop headstock.
It came in 6 and twelve string versions.
The built-in effects are interesting,
they consist of an E-tuner (playing a quiet E-note), treble/bass boost,
distortion, repeater, and
palm-operated wah-wah pedal. They are powered by a 9V battery
accessible under the pad on back of
the body. Each effect has an on/off switch and
all (with the exception of the wah-wah) have a separate control.
The most famous R&B/Soul Ultrasonic player is Catfish Collins
(brother of Bootsy Collins) with
James Brown, George Clinton
and the Parliaments.
The Vox "Ultrasonic" was made in '67 & '68. Less than 200 were produced.
